Podcasting

How do I do it?
When you see a podcast on the Internet you can often just click on the link to a particular show and a window will pop up and the audio will start. You can bookmark that page and come back each time a new podcast is posted. Podcasts are recurring events, like a television series or a daily radio show. Podcasts can be created daily, weekly, monthly, or at any interval that the podcast creator decides on. This GreatAge podcast will be posted weekly every Friday. So you can simply visit the podcast page every week to listen to the latest broadcast.

Downloading and using the software
You can also “subscribe” to this podcast by using a free software program that will automatically download each and every new episode of any podcast that you have subscribed to.

If you are using Windows XP, iTunes is one of the easiest programs to use to listen to podcasts lie this GreatAge podcast. It is available for free from the Apple website at www.itunes.com. Even though it is an Apple product, it works on both PCs and Macs. Other popular podcasting software is iPodder, a free program that is available for Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Mac OS 10.3 and higher, and FeedDemon, a $29.95 program that is available for Windows 98 or better.

Using iTunes
Since using iTunes is the easiest, we will start there. You simply download the software from the Apple website.
Want to start the exciting hobby of listening to podcasts? Then you’ve come to the right place. It’s easy to download these Internet audio broadcasts and once you do, you can listen to fun and informative programming on just about any topic you can imagine.

The most important thing to understand about iTunes, that is not necessarily apparent, is that there are several main windows. When you start the main program you will be at the iTunes window and will see iTunes at the main title bar at the top of the screen. This is the area where you can see your library of songs, podcasts, playlists, and other iTunes assets.

The other main window is the Music Store where you can purchase music and also download free podcasts. To get to the Music Store, click on Music Store from the left menu of the iTunes main window.

Once there, click on Podcasts from the left menu. You will then see an entire screen of choices. Each of these is a podcast that you can subscribe to. The middle has podcasts listed by topics. The right menu lists the top podcasts. There are hundreds of podcasts to choose from. You will find everything from news to trivia.

Click on any podcast to see the currently listed episodes. You can then listen to any episode and/or click on the subscribe button. If you click on subscribe, every future episode will be automatically recorded on your computer as it becomes available. You can click on the update button on the top right of the screen to update your podcasts manually.

If you have an iPod or other music player that will synchronize with iTunes, you can then plug your music player to your computer and all of the podcasts that you subscribe to will be automatically transferred to your music player for you to listen to where ever you go.

To see the selection of podcasts that you have subscribed to simply click on Podcasts from the left menu of the iTunes screen. If you are at the Music Store simply close the Music Store windows and the iTunes window will be beneath it.

If you know the Internet address of a podcast feed, you can subscribe to it by choosing Advanced, then choosing Subscribe to Podcast. At that screen you can simply enter the URL of the podcast you want to subscribe to.

Even if you don’t download iTunes to get free podcasts, this mini-tutorial will show you how easy it is. Be sure to save it. Podcasting is getting more and more popular everyday. Several new podcasts are added each week to the iTunes podcast list. You can now listen to CNN, Bill O’Reiley, and Ebert & Roeper podcasts along with many, many informative and entertaining non-celebrities who talk about technology, news, politics, science hobbies, and more.
